Album: Neurosis - "Souls At Zero"

"To go on a mythic journey into your own self..."

I feel like not nearly enough people talk about this record, or recognize its importance. Come on! This is where Neurosis made the transition seemingly out of nowhere from slightly left-of- field thrashy hardcore to the massive phychedelic infused sludge that they play today. I can imagine how confused/enraged fans of the bands previous works were when they started hearing samples, synths, violins, flutes, and trumpets entwined with these much more challenging and intricate compositions. But by now it's obvious that evolution goes hand-in-hand with the band. This is probably the strangest thing Neurosis ever did, but goddamn if it isn't a masterpiece. It's not one of those situations where it's just good for its time, it's just really fucking good and still stands strong today. The creativity that they tapped into, and the urgency that everything is played with make this a truly original and powerful record. I can't comprehend how this was conceived in 1992. There's still nothing else like it. Bow down to the gods.

"I tried to touch the feelings they have shown,
our cancers grown into a stone.
More cracks as our ceiling caves in.
This is our destiny."
