Single: Gas Huffer - "Firebug / Jesus Was My Only Friend"

Okay, so I just posted a slightly more "together" effort from Gas Huffer (which, by the way, is still pretty frantic), now I feel an urge to post the most spastic, rockin' thing possible by them. Here's the first single they ever released, which is super tight and insanely.. well... insane. This was released in 1989 by Black Label Records.

1. Firebug
2. Jesus Was My Only Friend

Album: Gas Huffer: "Just Beautiful Music"

Here's Gas Huffer's fifth album called "Just Beautiful Music." Just like most Gas Huffer albums this is spastic, fun and schitzophrenic with a twist of frantic comedy. What makes this different from most Gas Huffer albums is that they experiment in a slightly more toned down (yet still strange) alternative, Mudhoney-esque vibe. This is all over the place in a really interesting way and if you can accept the slight diversion from their usual direction you will thoroughly enjoy this album. So whether you want to dance, have an epileptic fit, or pass out on the floor upon hearing this... here it is.

1. Rotten Egg
2. Beware Of Viking
3. Over The Side
4. Is That For Me?
5. Clay Pigeon
6. Old Man Winter
7. Hacked
8. The Last Act
9. The Princess
10. Don't Panic
11. Jungles Of Guam
12. The Surgeons
13. Mr. Inbetween
14. Cut The Check
15. Bridge To The 21st Century
16. You May Have Already Won

Album: Chris Eckman: "The Black Field"

Maybe this isn't crushing, nor is it primal or noisy, but Chris Eckman's voice was always my favorite part of the Walkabouts and this album is just too good to pass up posting. This is "The Black Field" by Chris Eckman - dripping with minimalist acoustic guitars and a soulful, sad atmosphere ... and the brilliantly haunting lyrics are the cherry on top. It kind of sounds like the Walkabouts stripped down to the bare instrumentals and void of Carla's sometimes abrasive vocals. The highlight of this album is unquestionably the title track, which is steadily rhythmic and has to contain some of the coolest lyrics ever. This album is only 9 tracks so you should give it a shot even if stuff like this isn't usually your thing.

1. Night Like These
2. Healing Waters of the Flood
3. Low Country
4. Crystalline
5. Befell
6. The Black Field
7. Pirates Clowns
8. Restless
9. Why Can't I Touch It

That's right.. I'm not making this shit up. Honestly, it's unfortunate news but also one of the most hilarious things I've heard in a long time.

Album: Nick Oliveri - "Death Acoustic"

This is Nick Oliveri's recent solo album titled "Death Acoustic". I've always appreciated this man's ability to bring an angry, punk rock attitude to acoustic music and so it's beyond cool to see a complete album of him doing acoustic songs. It's even cooler to see him acoustically cover songs from past bands he's been in such as "Love Has Passed Me By" by Kyuss and "I'm Gonna Leave You" by Queens of the Stone Age. This is Oliveri's second solo album and is all in all a really enjoyable, angsty, comedy laced release. He's also doing a tour for this album right now so catch it if you can!

1. Start A Fight
2. Invisible Like The Sky
3. Dairy Queen
4. I'm Gonna Leave You
5. Love Has Passed Me By

Split: Brothers of the Sonic Cloth/Mico De Noche

Do you like heavy, sludgy, muddy, crushing music? Well, as promised, here's the recent Brothers of the Sonic Cloth split with Mico De Noche. This is heavy as hell and was only released on 10" vinyl format - needless to say it is very limited edition. The track "Fires Burn Dim In The Shadow of the Mountain" is a 12 minute crushingly satisfying, sludgy epic and the Mico De Niche tracks are just as deliciously heavy. I'm thrilled to have possession of this on MP3 format as this is one of the greatest doom related (or actually any genre) releases I've heard in quite some time so now you can enjoy it as well.. and enjoy you shall.

1. Fires Burn Dim In the Shadow of the Mountain (BOTSC)
2. Misanthrope (Mico De Noche)
3. Ganges (Mico De Noche)

Demos: Brothers of the Sonic Cloth

Ah, Brothers of the Sonic Cloth.. The Tad Doyle project with bone crushing, mind melting material that seems to be so hard to get ahold of. Luckily I have my hands on some of their early demos and am going to post them right now. I also have my hands on the BOTSC/Mico De Niche Split which I've already uploaded but is scheduled to post tomorrow just becuase I'm being a horrible tease and I don't want you to overdose on too much heavy music in one day. Have fun with this.

2. Dark Companions/Centuries of the Night
3. I Am (Live)

Live Recording: Shrinebuilder, 11/13/09, Baltimore MD

Hey everyone... I'm bumping this post because it's come to my attention that the DL link was broken - if you didn't get a chance to grab this the first time around everything should be in order now.

Can't make it to any dates on the upcoming Shrinebuilder tour? Well, I've spent the better part of the evening decoding, encoding and exploding with anger in efforts of trying to convert FLAC files to MP3s of a decent size. Finally I was successful and you can now enjoy the fruits of my labour by listening to this live recording of Shrinebuilder in Baltimore from November 13, 2009. I'm not sure exactly who to thank for this but if you were the one who recorded this set let me know and I will give you all deserved credit. Photo credit is on the picture itself. Now.. give this a download and enjoy the live Shrinebuilder experience - minus that sweaty guy next to you that's trying to sing along even though he doesn't know the lyrics. (Dad?)

(...for those who can't read the tiny font in the above picture...)

01. We Let the Hell Come
02. Solar Benediction
03. The Architect

Single: 500 Ft. Of Pipe: "So Good / Your Heart is Angry But Your Mind Is Stoned"

Gotta give a big thanks to my fellow heavy music blogger Riez of STONER ROCK IS HERE TO STAY for this one. After my previous post of "The Electric Church of the New Light" he recommended this 500 Ft Of Pipe single to me so I thought I'd share the love. The first track, "So Good", is furious, fuzzed out, and rocking.. and, just when you thought it couldn't get any more furious, the next track, "Your Heart is Angry But Your Mind Is Stoned", will rip you apart with an even more spastic level of raw psychedelia. Enjoy.

1. So Good
2. Your Heart Is Angry But Your Mind Is Stoned

Live Recording: Trouble, 1983

Two words: Doom. Metal.
I stray away from this in favor of other genres sometimes, but it always creeps back up on me.. and when it does it hits in full force, as things should be. I've been on a Trouble/Iron Man/Saint Vitus/Candlemass binge for the past few days and so it's only appropriate for me to share this live recording of Trouble from 1983. This recording was apparantly what got Trouble their first record deal and I can see why. All I can say is wow - Trouble were (and are!) an awesome band, and insanely tight live. This is worth a listen... or a bunch of listens.

1. Intro
2. Bastards Will Pay
3. Gidion
4. Son Of A Bitch
5. Victim Of The Insane
6. Fear No Evil

If you want to hear some really well done psychedelic, heavy rock then look no further. This is "The Electrifying Church of the New Light" by 500 Ft. Of Pipe. Fuzzed out and uncontrollably catchy; this album is extremely addicting and will take you to another world.. and that's what psychedelic music is supposed to do, isn't it?

Remixes: Queens of the Stone Age

We always show lots of love for Queens of the Stone Age here at Ritual Room and today will be no different. Here are a bunch of remixed versions of QOTSA songs from various sources, most of which are really wicked. "A Song For The Deaf vs. The Blind Can Go Get Fucked" is an interesting, even more unsettling take on the song and this is worth a download for the "You Think I Aint Worth A Dollar..." Troy remix alone. This post is especially great (if I do say so myself) since it's a goddamn Monday and some upbeat music is in order.

1. Little Sister (Contradictator Remix)
2. The Blood Is Love (Contradictator Remix)
3. You Think I Aint Worth A Dollar But I Feel Like A Millionare (Troy Remix)
4. No One Knows (UNKLE Remix)

EP: God Bullies - "Plastic Eye Miracle"

I just got a request to upload this and am more than happy to oblige. I recently uploaded a single by the God Bullies, using words like "menacingly catchy" and "wierd" to describe it, which of course apply to this as well. This is some unsettling and disturbing, strange, gritty rock and roll. This EP seems to be hard to come by for some reason which is a shame. This was released in 1988 by Mad Queen Records and I think was reissued later on by Glitterhouse.

1. It's Over
2. You Cry Now
3. She's Wild
4. Plastic Eye Miracle

News: New High on Fire Track + Arik Roper Cover Art

I'm a couple days late on this one, but it's still worth posting. A new High on Fire track called "Frost Hammer" (pretty badass title) was just released and you can listen to it here. I'm digging it, the track does the title justice and then some. Oh, and here's the Arik Roper art for the album which was also just released. Full album is released February 23rd.

Album: Burning Witch - "Crippled Lucifer"

In the mood for some misery? Anyone? ...Anyone? If you said yes, (good god what is wrong with you?) then you should listen to this album by Burning Witch, which is essentially a compilation album containing their entire small discography. As we all know Southern Lord likes to reissue the hell out of everything ($$$) on every possible format, so if you're wondering why I'm posting such an easily accessible album it's not only because I'm lazy but because I've been meaning to show this to a Khanate loving friend of mine for quite some time and I thought I may as well post it here for anyone else that likes to delve into spirals of a little (or a lot of) misery and depression every now and again. This is a fine piece of extreme doom from a band that should have stuck around a little longer. So enjoy... or lock yourself in a dark room and cry yourself to sleep. But enough about Friday night.

Tour Dates: Shrinebuilder, USA

These tour dates were just posted on Shrinebuilder's MySpace blog:

"Shrinebuilder US Dates March 2010

March 03 Los Angeles Echo
March 04 Los Angeles Echo
March 05 San Jose Voodoo Lounge
March 06 Oakland Oakland Metro
March 07 San Francisco The Independent
March 09 Seattle Neumos

3/2-3/9 with A Storm of Light
3/5-7 with Harvestman

The band will also be playing NY and the 2010 Scion Rock Festival. Details on those dates coming soon."

Playing NY? Could this be for ATP? Sleep will be there already after all...

On a side note, as of today there are over 10,000 page views on this site. There must be drugs in the water or something, but thanks for reading! (despite your possible drug influence, of course.. but I suppose that's just a given)

Album: Litmus - "You Are Here"

This is Hawkwind worship at it's absolute finest. Litmus is signed to (Lee Dorrian's label) Rise Above Records, and their debut album "You Are Here" was released in 2004. This album is a sonic attack (see what I did there?) of mind bending space rock; in fact, when you listen to this you won't know whether to dance or pass out in a hypnotic state of psychedelia.. So put on your proverbial spacesuit and get ready for a trippy and rockin' good time!

1. Infinity Drive
2. Dreams Of Space
3. You Are Here
4. Sonic Light
5. Rays Of Sonic Light
6. (Theta Wave) Inductor

Review: Mudhoney - The Starlite Room, Edmonton AB, January 8th 2010

As previously posted, I recently went to see Mudhoney at the Starlite Room in Edmonton, Alberta. They're clearly always a great live band and I was happy to see them for the second time after watching the insanity that ensued while they played at Sub Pop 20th. I actually met Mark Arm after that show but got really nervous for some reason and didn't say much after he signed my "Touch Me I'm Sick"/"Sweet Young Thing..." single.

When the show started I was trying to keep a mental check of the songs they played in order but I have a pretty bad memory when it comes to those things and since I had a couple of drinks in me it was even more hopeless. I can tell you that they opened with "The Money Will Roll Right In" and dived into a few tracks from "The Lucky Ones", then Mark Arm grabbed his guitar and they continued to throw out many classic Mudhoney songs including "Fix Me", "Blinding Sun", "When Tomorrow Hits", "Sweet Young Thing Ain't Sweet No More", "You Got It", "Good Enough", "Suck You Dry" and of course, "Touch Me I'm Sick". It felt surreal when about halfway through their set some guy jumped up on stage and grabbed Mark Arm's microphone and started yelling into it. Needless to say he got dragged off stage pretty fast and after a few adjustments to the equipment he had fucked with in the process they shrugged it off and continued to play.

I was fortunate enough to have my photographer friend Ashley with me, so below are some pictures she took at the show including a gratuitous shot of myself looking pleased while my friends and I were messing around before the show began. You can check out more of Ashley's photography here, she has a lot of really well done stuff and is also joining me at ATP New York so you have more great photos to look forward to from that. The next Charles Peterson? Maybe.

EP: Tad - "Salt Lick"

Out of print Tad EP, anyone?

You really can't go wrong with "Salt Lick" - it's just a non-stop attack of low end, dirty, fuzzed out, greasy, mind blowing, primally heavy rock the way only Tad can do it. I've been binging on Tad even more than usual lately and just really appreciate how rough this EP is. I'm not going to type out a long review as usual becuase my brain is fried and I'm off to see Mudhoney (review will be posted in the next couple days) so go on, break yourself off a slab of this heaviness.

Live Recording: Porn/Big Business/Melvins - 5.2.07 - Carling Academy Islington - London UK

you can pop this into the stereo and pretend that you're actually there

this is the entire concert

and i'm going to take this opportunity to say a little something about the current state of the melvins...

when they'd released the (A) SENILE ANIMAL album...i was kind of stoked to hear what they'd sound like with 2 drummers and playing as a 4 piece (as they'd taken in the band big business)...and as soon as i'd heard songs like "civilized worm" and "the hawk" i was all like "fucking yes!"...and i listened to the album quite a bit...but then it suddenly lost it's luster with me (maybe because of my constant playing of it)...and then they released the NUDE WITH BOOTS album...and i hate saying it...but i was pretty bored with it...as soon as the opening moments of "the kicking machine" i automatically thought of led zeppelin (which is a good thing)...and it seemed as if the band had drifted off into 1970's fm radio-land...even when they sounded as if they'd brought back the old melvins via the beginning of "dog island"...it still didn't seem right...are you like me and miss the days of the melvins trio?...you know...back in the days of GLUEY PORCH TREATMENTS/HOUDINI/STAG/PRICK...in my opinion...the band hasn't released a melvins-y album since 1999's THE BOOTLICKER...and reading the interview with buzzo a few spaces down he eludes to the recording of an upcoming album saying "it`s going to be different than what you might imagine. and not in the way you might imagine."...perhaps they'll be going back in time...but really...the melvins don't seem to be the kind of band that does that...maybe they'll throw in an orchestra...maybe they'll get all pink floyd's THE WALL...but they'll more than likely keep on making music for themselves

still with me?

now for the reward

as for the order of bands on this particular show...i think it went as follows:

porn: (there are no song titles to any of the songs...so if you know them...share with the class...in case you didn't know who this band was...it's made up of melvins drummer dale crover...bassist/producer billy anderson...vocalist/guitarist tim moss)

1 - track 1
2 - track 2
3 - track 3
4 - track 4
5 - track 5

big business:
1 - hands up
2 - shields
3 - grounds for divorce
4 - just as the day was dawning
5 - easter romantic
6 - start your digging

melvins:
1 - another 4th of july...ruined (w/big business)
2 - the talking horse
3 - the bloated pope
4 - civilized worm
5 - oven
6 - suicide in progress
7 - set me straight/deserted cities of the heart*
8 - sky pup
9 - let it all be
10 - blood witch
11 - a history of drunks
12 - rat-faced granny

Single: God Bullies - "Tell Me / Creepy People"

Like most God Bullies, this single could be a soundtrack for losing your mind. Menacingly catchy, gritty, noisy and wierd, it's obvious from this single why God Bullies were a great band. This was released in 1991 but contains versions of these songs from 1986. The first song, "Tell Me", I initially discovered from the "Dope, Guns, and Fucking in the Streets" compilations and it was one of my favorite songs from that epic grouping of songs. The next song, "Creepy People", is a schitzophrenic freak show of glorious, wierd noise.

1. Tell Me
2. Creepy People

Interview: King Buzzo - stonerrock.com

Here's yet another interview to start off the new year - this one is with everyone's favorite interviewee, Buzz Osborne! (Well, it's mine anyways). You should probably take the time to read this if you're wondering about those Melvins reissues and box set that have not yet come to fruition or a new album in 2010. All and all it's a pretty good, entertaining read and was done for stonerrock.com.

"EGO the Living Planet: This interview is for StonerRock.com so I need to ask something “70`s.” Which would you rather have: a van conversion with a water bed and a painting of a topless chick slayin` a dragon on the side, or a muscle car?

Buzzo: Muscle car. Let me qualify that. I don`t really care about cars whatsoever. I just want the work. If I was rich, I`d buy a brand new fully loaded Cadillac every two years. That`s what I would do. Then I`d turn it in and get a new one. Fully loaded.

EGO the Living Planet: A friend of mine wanted to know about the recording process for the opening track on Nude With Boots.

Buzzo: What`s the opening track? "The Kicking Machine." Well, not anymore unusual than what we normally do. I`m not sure what he`s referring to. We`re not afraid to do whatever we think sounds good. If we like it we think everybody else should like it too.

EGO the Living Planet: When you die and your widow sells your image to Rock Band and videos surface of a digital Buzz signing along to Blink 182`s “All the Small Things,” are you going to roll in your grave or laugh from beyond?

Buzzo: I`m gonna have my carcass incinerated. I won`t have a grave. I`ll be ashes.

EGO the Living Planet: Are there any plans for more vinyl releases of your recent albums?

Buzzo: Yes, well, the only one that hasn`t come out on vinyl yet is Nude With Boots. That`s coming out on vinyl pretty soon. We have some weird plans for it.

EGO the Living Planet: Big special edition thing?

Buzzo: There`s going to be, yeah.

EGO the Living Planet: Are there going to be more regular editions of the stuff on vinyl?

Buzzo: Well, the (a) Senile Animal one, we haven`t even sold our copies yet. When we go on tour again we`re going to have fresh copies of our own to sell.

EGO the Living Planet: What`s going on with the reissues of the Boner albums we heard about a while ago?

Buzzo: We just haven`t gotten around to doing them yet. We`re still going to do that.

EGO the Living Planet: Bonus tracks, anything like that?

Buzzo: Oh Yeah, all kinds of weird shit. Pictures, bonus stuff.

EGO the Living Planet: What about the box set?

Buzzo: That`s going to happen too. Just as soon as we get it done.

EGO the Living Planet: You guys have a number of rarities and non LP tracks in our catalog.

Buzzo: No there`s not actually. There`s not a whole lot. Most of the stuff we`ve recorded has come out.

EGO the Living Planet: Any plans for a compilation of rare tracks?

Buzzo: Well maybe, if it made sense.

EGO the Living Planet: Is there any chance you guys will be taking advantage of new technology to find new ways to present music, like an iPhone ap?

Buzzo: Well you know, in order to do those sorts of things you have to have an interest. Someone has to have an interest in us doing that. So far that hasn`t happened. I`m not too worried.

EGO the Living Planet: What`s coming out soon? An album next year?

Buzzo: We have a new remix record coming out in about... a few days. Nine days. Called Chicken Switch.

EGO the Living Planet: After that a new record? Next year maybe?

Buzzo: Yeah, we`ll be recording a new record real soon. I can`t wait. It`s going to be different than what you might imagine. And not in the way you might imagine. "

Interview: Blag Dahlia - Rock n Roll Dating

How did I ring in the new year? Why, with the Dwarves and Blag Dahlia belting out "Motherfucker"! I'm still on a Dwarves high and can't think of anything better to post than this interview with Blag from a couple months ago done by our resident cool guy, the very talented Daniel House (on his website - Rock N Roll Dating). Check out the rest of his site if you haven't already - there are some great interviews with Mark Lanegan, Jack Endino, and of course this one which is a really good and interesting read.

You can read the interview here:

As for the show itself, the set was fantastic. Yes, there was some nudity. Yes, I got the mic shoved into my face a few times. And yes... the Dwarves can still kick ass.

Hopefully everyone had a great time partying on new years and I'd like to say thanks for sticking with me as I got this site together in 2009! I started this blog for fun and needless to say it's been a great experience running it and it's already gone past my expectations. On that note i'd like to send out another thanks to my contributors and to all of you that send me kind e-mails and the bands that send me their material. Okay.. the heartfelt moment is over, but you can expect some really cool features and contributors in 2010 as i continue to ramble and rant my way onto your computers.

ROCK,

well...by now you already know of the impending soundgarden reunion

and i know that, like me, you're probably waiting with bated breath to see exactly what they'll sound like nowadays (my god i hope it doesn't go into some sort of audioslave direction)

and like myself...you're hoping that they can follow the awesomeness of the BADMOTORFINGER/SUPERUNKNOWN/DOWN ON THE UPSIDE trilogy with something just as awesome (not to that i don't dig the rest of their albums...but damn...it's like finally losing your virginity...it gets all built up and then it explodes...and you're all like "um...what?")

but enough about me...

here we have the soundgardeners in fine form via the BADMOTORFINGER-era

1 - face pollution
2 - outshined
3 - gun
4 - jesus christ pose
5 - cop killer*
6 - hands all over
7 - rusty cage
8 - slaves & bulldozers

Although rumours of a Soundgarden reunion have been swarming for a while it seemed rather hopeless so I was really stoked to hear this news. I've been hoping for this for a long time - all the while watching in horror while Chris Cornell made one bad move after another.
I wonder what this reunion will entail. A tour? A new album? Reissues? ...Soundgarden featuring Timbaland? I'll post more news on this as it arises.
