Dead Moon somehow always managed to produce some of the catchiest and dirtiest sounding rock music, even on a label that prides itself (or used to...) on dirty sounding music. Here's a single that was released in '93 for the singles club containing 2 tracks that manage to be both ominous and fun.

I think it's about time this one came up to the surface... The infamous Tad - "Daisy/Ritual Device" 7" that was released on Sub Pop in '88. In true messy, Tad style, 964 of these were released and there is no picture sleeve. Some of the most brutal Tad material in existance.

For a blog that's named after a Skin Yard track and specializes in posting Sub Pop singles, some might say that it's kind of a failure on my part that I'm only posting this Skin Yard/Sub Pop single here now.

Always better late than never, this is the fantastic "Start at the Top / Watch" single that was released in the late 80's and easily contains of my 2 favorite Skin Yard tracks. The first track is rippingly catchy and heavy with the strange vibes and rocking psychedelia that embody what I love so much about this band. The second track, "Watch", is eerier than the first but I promise you, just as raging. To summarize: this single will take you on a trip. Let it.

I got a request begging me to post this one and didn't have it so I dropped a line to the fantastic Brent (who runs the Helios Creed tribute page) and he (unsurprisingly) had mp3s of this single and was kind enough to share them. (I also got a request for the Das Damien single which I don't have either... anyone?) So what can you expect from this single? Well, like all Helios Creed, expect a lot of mind bending psychedelia, inspiringly wierd guitar sounds and a lot of innovation.

Is it actually possible that I haven't posted any Babes in Toyland yet? Oh well. I'm currently at ATP New York (well, not at this very second but, you know) so it's been hectic (in the best way) and I was just discussing this band and needed to post this single. On the unlikely chance that someone hasn't heard BiT before, this is just some insanely well done, female fronted, heavy punk. This single was released in 1990. Enjoy.

I guess this one was a long time coming. This is the first single ever released on the Sub Pop singles club - the infamous Nirvana "Love Buzz / Big Cheese" single. As a reader of this blog I'm not going to insult your intelligence going too far into this one, but if you don't feel like shelling out 2 grand for your own copy of this you might as well give this a download.

This could possibly be the shortest Sub Pop single I have posted thus far - clocking in at a total of a little over three minutes, this is a really short and sweet yet effectively done single. I won't lie, it took me a while to listen to this one becuase of the cover image of the band wearing thick framed glasses, moustaches and "ironic" clothing (that's modern day Sub Pop for you I guess. ...Is that the band? Whatever.) but I was pleasantly surprised that it's actually some really messy and catchy punk rock. What I'm trying to say is that this single is really well done and at three minutes, what do you have to lose?

Single: Sub Pop Edition #16 Blues Control - "Snow Day / Paul's Winter Solstice"

I have a feeling you might have to already be a Blues Control fan to appreciate this one but I guess you never know.

Both of the tracks on this single are really orchestral and delicately hypnotic, and if you're into really intricate and experimental instrumental stuff then this might just be for you. Personally, I think I'm going to have to give this one a few more chances since it doesn't have as much of a backbone as I'd normally like and I lack the immediate patience for it - although this is probably due to my fetish for epic doom metal as of late so don't let me stop you from checking this out. I realise my description was less than convincing but there's something strangely beautiful about these tracks so take of it what you will.

Single: Sub Pop Edition #15 Mika Miko - "Sex Jazz (extended) / Bastard in Love"

Mika Miko is a girl (or should i say grrrl) punk rock band that is sort of reminiscent of a more experimental version of Bikini Kill. I have a hard time with the too cheesy in-your-face attitudes of a lot of girl punk bands (ahem, L7) so it's cool to see some legit ones like Mika Miko coming around. I love how experimental this single is, incorporating all sorts of different instruments and styles into two really cool tracks.

Single: Sub Pop Edition #14 Dutchess and the Duke - "Side By Side / Daggers"

Finally I find some motivation to continue uploading some more of the Sub Pop singles from the singles club 3.0! The next little ditty (oh god) that I chose to post is a single by Dutchess and the Duke. This consists of some classic male/female vocal harmonies on top of ethereal guitars and folky melodies. The first track is called "Side by Side" and is fun, lightly catchy and easy to digest... and I especially enjoy the second track called "Daggers" becuase it mixes a sinister, mystical feeling into an otherwise folky pop song.

Okay... I promise after this I'll start uploading the newest Sub Pop singles again. I just had to post this as Steve sent this over along with the Gary Lee Conner one I recently posted and both are really awesome and hard to come by.

I'm going to have to keep this short as I spilled coffee all over the place while typing the above paragraph (guess I got a little too stoked on this single) and so here are the basics: this single is by Love Battery and was released in 1991 - the first song called "Foot" is really upbeat and catchy yet relaxed. The b-side, "Mr. Soul," is a more psychedelic but equally rockin' version of the Neil Young song. So go ahead and enjoy this while I attempt to remove coffee stains from my furniture.

Single: Sub Pop Edition #12 Gary Lee Conner - "Grasshoppers Daydream / Behind the Smile"

Here's a single from 1999 from (ex Screaming Trees guitarist) Gary Lee Conner. I always really enjoyed his bluesy-psychedelic style of guitar playing and was therefore stoked to come across this single. This is seriously awesome and if the fact that it's Gary Lee Conner isn't enough for you this also features Josh Homme, Van Conner and Mark Pickerel. You gotta love how this kind of bridges the gap between the Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age. My only complaint is that there aren't more tracks.

Single: Sub Pop Edition #11 Black Mountain - "Lucy Brown / Shelter"

I can't believe I got this Black Mountain single in November of 08 and am only uploading it now. (You know what they say... better late than never.) This was the first single I recieved for the Sub Pop singles club and remains to be one of the best. Black Mountain has put out a lot of awesome material over the years but this single is definitely a favorite - you just can't fuck with it as it's some really well done, perfectly Neil Young-esque, catchy, psychedelic rock n roll.

Single: Sub Pop Edition #10 Thee Oh Sees - "In The Shadow of the Giant"

This single by The Oh Sees kind of reminds me of Black Mountain blended with campfire music. This is really simple and catchy with a mystical touch. I'm not going to lie to you - the vocals aren't really anything unique and many hipsters across the world probably would (and do) get a hard-on for this but that's just what you can expect from Sub Pop nowadays and there's a certain wierd, eclectic quality about this that makes it enjoyable.. especially in the track "Where The People Do Drugs".
