Megapost: 50 Killer Riffs for 50,000 Hits

As of today there have been 50,000 hits in this site and so I thought I would celebrate by putting a list of 50 awesome riffs together. What a monumental occasion! (Okay, not really but I thought this would be fun.) This will, of course, include an upload and don't expect one of those shitty, thoughtless lists straight from Rolling Stone magazine that just grabs overused choices from radio classic rock bands as these are just riffs I legitimately enjoy and groove out to on a regular basis. Even though some are obvious choices like "Into the Void", "Smoke on the Water" or "Sunshine of Your Love", I chose them for a reason and most of these are just riffs from my music collection that get me pumped up for different reasons.

Since these are some of my personal favorites, let me briefly explain what I look for in a good riff - the three most important factors for me are groove, hook and weight. I will take catchiness, steady rolling groove and simplicity over wanky, overdone riffs anyday and I think the best riffs are usually the simplest. Also, I seriously considered putting the entirety of "Dopesmoker" on this list but decided it was way too long. But anyways, take of this what you will - I ordered the songs alphabetically to make it easier to go through.

Megapost: Snakepit Discography

Okay, so this post isn't really that "mega" since this discography consists of 5 songs... and before you start thinking that I'm posting a Slash project, let me introduce Snakepit as yet another one of those inbred Seattle groups that didn't last very long. This was a project of Joe Preston and Mike Johnson before they graced Dinosaur Jr or the Melvins and obviously is intriguing for that reason alone - it's worth a listen for anyone who's into the whole late 80's early 90's Seattle scene, but don't expect it to blow you away. My advice is... give it a listen, take it for what it is, then put on a Melvins album.

This was sent over by the guy who seems to be my source on elusive Seattle projects, Steven. Gotta give a big thanks to him for this and all the other singles he's sent over!

Megapost: Sub Pop 100, 200 & 300

I'm now on my second day of rampantly uploading my music collection onto my new computer which has forced me to rediscover many old albums that have been collecting dust. Under a pile of horrendously abused Alice Donut and Melvins CDs I just found the black box with the "Sub Pop 200" compilation CD in it which has started bringing back memories of my first encounters with bands I now love such as Blood Circus, Beat Happening and Girl Trouble. This then triggered me to dig up the "Sub Pop 300" CD which was put out by MOJO as a way of promoting Sub Pop's 20th anniversary a couple of years ago, and of course the legendary "Sub Pop 100" CD. I feel that all these compilation albums are fairly perfect in representing the label's finest bands from each era (although SP 300 is in there mostly just for shits and giggles and all you completists out there).

The potential for discovering something great in these albums is off the charts and so hopefully you'll enjoy these as much as I do:

Dave Grohl Megapost

i'd originally posted this over on my shiny grey monotone blog...but i figure that there are more than a few dave grohl fans over here as well...but i've thrown on a little extra for you folks that SGM didn't get (that being the queens of the stone age and them crooked vultures stuff)

don't say anything as SGM is pretty jealous and might do a little bit of watering your lawn or something...if you know what i mean


a friend of mine is in a band...and they wrote a song called "dave grohl,put the guitar down...this is an intervention"

no truer words have been spoken/written (well...there probably have been...just go with me here)

i've never really been a foo fighters fan...and the only song i've been able to listen to more than once was a cover of the gary numan jam "down in the park" that was put on the SONGS IN THE KEY OF X: MUSIC FROM AND INSPIRED BY THE X-FILES soundtrack released back in 1996 (and really...it's 1 of 4 reasons to own it...the others being "red right hand" by nick cave and the bad seeds and "star me kitten" by rem w/william burroughs and "unmarked helicopters" by soul coughing)

as you may already know...he played for some band called nirvarna (or something like that) back in the 1990's...and before that he played in a band called scream out of washington dc...and he's played drums in various other bands (queens of the stone age...nine inch nails...killing joke (which is ironic because they tried to sue nirvana over a riff that was "stolen" from their song "eighties" and used in the nirvana song "come as you are"...which i will admit...sounds similar)...tenacious d)

but we're talking about nirvana here

before he joined the band back in 1990...the band had went through a string of drummers: aaron burkhard...dave foster...chad channing...

and then they had some guy named dale crover take over the stool for a bit...it was as if it were natural progression...then came dave grohl

it's like nirvana went from being ac/dc to being led zeppelin (drummer-wise)

and to be honest with you...the first time i heard nirvana (which was via mtv showing the "smells like teen spirit" video every 10 minutes) i wasn't really all that impressed...but the more i listened to it...the more dave grohl's beating the drums like they owed him money style beat it's way into my head

now i could continue to gush like a head wound about the man...but i'm not going to

this is some nirvana music with everything else turned down (so if you wanted to...you could impress the chicks by throwing this on the stereo and sitting behind a drum kit and be all like "hey ladies...check this action out!"...and you could mime your way into some girl's panties)
