Album: Sofy Major - Permission To Engage

hey there

remember me?

sorry it's taken me so long to get back here

i was trapped in the ritual room basement

you can get all kinds of turned around down there

all i was looking for was the bathroom

but i ended up getting chased around by a gagggle of tiny people in king buzzo wigs

actually....they all looked like king buzzo...tiny king buzzos....

*shiver*

i don't like thinking about the goings on in the ritual room basement

it smells grungy

anyway...

here i am

and i brought some folks from france back with me

rumor has it that you like bands with names like godflesh and high on fire and the melvins and today is the day and neurosis

guess what

so do these guys

and so do i

but...i need to go and wash the basement off of me...so i'm just going to leave you all to get acquainted

Single: The Melvins/The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - "Black Betty/Black Betty"

So maybe you weren't one of the few lucky ones to get ahold of this split before it sold out... or maybe you were one of the few lucky ones and you just want some MP3s.... or maybe you don't fit into either of the latter categories and don't know what you're doing here. In any case, here's The Melvins and The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion doing their own renditions of the famously rocking track "Black Betty". You can thank me later by mailing me a copy.

News: Screaming Trees "Last Words: The Final Recordings" Album Out August

Here's some news to jazz up your Wednesday: a new Screaming Trees album containing remastered versions of their final recordings will be released early this August. The album is titled "Last Words: The Final Recordings" and was recorded in 1998-1999.

This news is as posted on Barrett Martin's facebook page earlier today:
"Hey Folks, I'm quite happy to announce that last night, Jack Endino and I finished mixing a new Screaming Trees album. Its the unreleased album we recorded in 1998-99 and its finally coming out on August 2nd on my label. Mark Lanegan, Van Conner, Lee Conner, and myself felt that these final songs should be heard, and soon they shall be. Here's the album cover, done by the renowned artist Erin Currier."

Yes, yes and yes!

Demo: Mark Lanegan Live at an Unknown Studio in Seattle 1991

Guess who's going to see Mark Lanegan in Seattle tomorrow?

...It's me, in case you didn't guess. In celebration of this fact here's an old live studio recording from Mark in Seattle from 1991. That's basically all I can tell you about this recording since I really don't know much else. (And in any case all you really need to know is that you'll get to hear some interesting versions of early Mark Lanegan songs.) So enjoy, and if anyone is also going to be at the Neptune show tomorrow holler at me!

I've been looking to post this incredible Brothers of the Sonic Cloth demo for, I don't know, forever. I just couldn't find it anywhere as only 50 copies were actually released in 2009. Luckily the band just released this for free streaming which is pretty incredible news! You can also download it for any price you choose. (Support this band!)

Album: Deep Purple - "The Book of Taliesyn"

Oh hey everyone - it's been a while, let's catch up.

Seriously though, the only reason I've been lacking in posts lately becuase I've been in the middle of the nightmare that is apartment hunting/moving (you know, things that are completely irrelevant to you). I'm going to try to make up my neglect right now by posting Deep Purple's second, psychedelic dream of an album titled "The Book of Taliesyn". Let's just say that if you are purely about "Machine Head" when it comes to Deep Purple, this may come as a surprise to you. All in all an amazing and overlooked release.

Album: Tinsel Teeth - Pink Eye

if you ever go to see these folks from providence,ri do what they do live...3 things will happen:

1: you'll get your ass kicked by some sweet noise

2: you'll more than likely see a pair of bare breasts covered in some sort of fluid (no...not that kind...but i wouldn't put anything past frontwoman stephanie)

3: you'll more than likely see a strap-on covered in some sort of fluid (again...courtesy of stephanie)

music-wise....the band has a lot in common with the jesus lizard and pissed jeans

Album: Elf - "Elf"

As much as I love Dio (RIP) and 70's rock, Elf's self titled release from 1972 is is a fairly recent discovery for me. But god this is a fun release and definitely among the cream of the crop for the era. Definitely expect CCR or even Queen more than Rainbow or Black Sabbath - bluesy guitar licks, pianos and some really solid songwriting and feel good music that you can't go wrong with. I'll be jamming this one on repeat this summer.

1. Hoochie Koochie Lady
2. First Avenue
3. Never More
4. I'm coming Back for You

Live Recording: Stiff Woodies - Live KAOS Session

this was a short lived band that involved folks that were in some other bands

bands with names like: melvins...mudhoney...nirvana

but on this particular recording (which was a little something they played on the radio back in 1986)...the members were krist novoselic on guitar...buzz osbourne on bass...and kurt cobain on the drums (and i'm hoping that i don't need to tell you which bands they came from)

they didn't have a set vocalist...so random members would just sing on random songs

1 - sin city* (no one really knows who sang on this one...it's rumored to be either matt lukin or dale crover)

2 - breakdance boogie (krist novoselic on vocals)

3 - loose** (buzz osbourne on vocals)

4 - c'mon and love me*** (buzz osbourne on vocals)

Video: Saint Vitus Perform New Track "Blessed Night" In Hollywood April 5th

On the last night of the recent Metalliance tour (Saint Vitus, Crowbar, Helmet), Saint Vitus debuted a new track called "Blessed Night". According to Wino a new album will be in the works this summer, and you can watch video of the new track being performed above (credit to metalassaultLA on youtube). This show took place on April 5th, 2011 in Hollywood.

How great is it to see bands like Saint Vitus are still going and putting stuff out there?

Single: Sub Pop Edition #29 Dead Moon - "Dirty Noise / Dark Deception"

Dead Moon somehow always managed to produce some of the catchiest and dirtiest sounding rock music, even on a label that prides itself (or used to...) on dirty sounding music. Here's a single that was released in '93 for the singles club containing 2 tracks that manage to be both ominous and fun.

1. Dirty Noise
2. Dark Deception

Album: Led Zeppelin - I

you may remember seeing the words "fuck led zeppelin, this is where it's at" over on the ritual room facebook page

it's a good thing that those words were posted anonymously as i'd hate to show up at someone's house and ruin their day with some nude air drumming to some "moby dick"

the battle has raged on for centuries as to who was the first heavy metal band

was it led zeppelin?

was it black sabbath?

bands have broken up...friends have been lost...plates have been smashed at the dinner table...

and the only answer i give to anyone that has posed that question to me is: go and listen to each band's first album...then come back and talk to me

but honestly...when it comes to each band's recorded output...i can listen to all of led zeppelin's albums over and over again

when it comes to black sabbath...you only really need their first 6 albums (yeah...that's right...sit down guy wearing the MOB RULES t-shirt)

but i digress

i was first turned onto led zeppelin by one of my teachers back in high school...and the first time my parents heard me listening to them...it blew their minds as i was listening to things they had grown up with

you can't deny the powerhouse that is/was drummer john bonham

or the laid back bass from john paul jones

or the hot licks from jimmy page

or the caterwauling nonsensical vocals of robert plant

that's right....i just used the terms "hot licks" and "caterwauling"

also....like you've never stood in front of a mirror and sang along to "dazed and confused" into a comb

yeah...me either

also...why hasn't a cover band called ZEPPATH happened yet? (and yes...they would only cover zeppelin and sabbath)

so...just go on ahead and give that DL down there a little poke

DL: led zeppelin I

This is "Sonic Prayer" by Earthless, which is best described as a 40 minute jam of furiously heavy, psychotic riffs and, well, this is massive. (Massively groovy). News: New Track by Mark Lanegan Released For "Rage Untethered" Game

That's right, new Mark Lanegan material! The track is called "Burning Jacobs Ladder" and was released/created for the "Rage Untethered" game trailer. (Fortunately it really doesn't disappoint despite the sellout undertones. I don't really blame Lanegan for doing something like this for the money/hype, either). Anyways, I'm loving the new track and am waiting on pins and needles for his next solo album. You can stream and download "Burning Jacob's Ladder" for free here.

And I definitely have to give a special thanks to Mark (a different Mark, obviously. Yarm. No, not that one either) for the tip on this one!

RIP

Mike Starr (Alice in Chains) allegedly died today after being arrested for drug possession just last month. Sad news as he was only 44 and Alice in Chains was just getting going again. Read more here.

News: Mudhoney - "Head On The Curb" LP Out Now!

"This vinyl-only release is Mid-period Mudhoney at its RAWEST. Original Bass Player Matt Lukin is in top form, as is the rest of the classic line-up, blasting out songs and ideas, some of which went on to be studio-fied for their Warner Bros debut PIECE OF CAKE, while others got lost to the dark crevices of time…UNTIL NOW. Besides the cover of SCTV classic I HATE THE BLOODY QUEEN, these recordings have NEVER been released, and represent a sonic assault that is pure Mudhoney. Raw, unabashed, and sometimes down-right no-fi. HEAD ON THE CURB writes a new chapter into Mudhoney’s legendary past." --Sub Pop

Um, apparantly this LP was released on the 2nd and Im just learning about it now. I'm currently feeling super incoherant but need to make a post about this since I'm way more hyped on this than any newer Mudhoney material being released and anyone that frequents this blog (do you exist?) needs to know. I can't wait to hear this and I'll post MP3s when/if I can track some down. Order through Sub Pop.

Side A:
1. Ritzville
2. I Want To Live
3. King Sandbox
4. 13th Floor Opening
5. Living Wreck
6. Acetone

Side B:
1. No End In Sight
2. Underide
3. Fun And Games
4. Confusion
5. When In Rome
6. I Hate The Bloody Queen

You can listen to the damn fine sounding title track "Hisingen Blues" on Graveyard's MySpace page here. My full support goes out to this group as they are one of the few 70's rock bands existing today that sound like they came straight from the era rather than just doing some cheesy emulation Wolfmother style. In the words of Graveyard... "Don’t mistake classic pieces of work for retro". Mark your calendars!

Single: The Thrown Ups - Smiling Panties

if you know anything of the grunge...you'll know that this band are considered to be the originators by some

and you should also know that half of this band went onto form mudhoney (vocalist/guitarist mark arm and guitarist steve turner)

and you should also know that there are some folks that wouldn't even consider this music (or so i've heard...i would never associate with those kinds of people)

and you should also know that there's a song called "my cock is the coin" included on this business

and you should also know that if you don't snag this up...someone is waiting across the street from your house...and they may or may not show up somewhere in your house naked at 3:00am

DL: smiling panties

Feature: Queens Of The Stone Age Playing SELF-TITLED In It's Entirety

there may be some of you out there that aren't currently aware that the band is currently on tour and are playing their 1998 SELF-TITLED album in it's entirety (in case you haven't already put that together for yourselves)

also...the album is set to get re-released on the 7th of this very month...and to add to all of that...there are some tracks that the band contributed to a split they did with a band called beaver (go on...get the giggles out of the way...we'll wait...) that was released back in 1998...and a song they contributed to a split they did with kyuss that was released back in 1997

and no...i'm not going to give you the titles of those songs...you'll just have to buy it for yourself to find out (or you could just use this thing i just recently came to find out about called google...apparently it comes in pretty handy)

and if you'd like to see the band play their SELF-TITLED album in it's entirety...go here to find out when and where

Album: Hater - "Hater"

I love this project and can't uptalk it enough - this is Hater's self titled release from 1993. Yeah, you get the Seattle superstar lineup (2 members of Soundgarden are involved), but don't expect Temple of the Dog! Expect really innovative and catchy alt rock. So enjoy... I know you will.

2. Who Do I Kill?
3. Tot Finder
4. Lion And Lamb
5. Roadside
6. Down Undershoe

Album: SuperGiant - "Antares"

I guess I've been pretty lame about posting here this month, but I just came across this album by SuperGiant from 2008 and am overcome with the need to post it. This album is called "Antares" and any heavy rock band with this hard of a Kyuss vibe is definitely up there in my books. The only downside to this is the occasionally terrible lyrics which is easy to overlook since the groove definitely makes up for it. And really, if you like riffs and groove and this album doesn't get to you then you must be dead inside. (Hell, I'm dead inside and it still got to me.)

1. Psychedelic Sunset
2. Petunias

News: Soundgarden In The Studio

Okay, this isn't so much news as photographic evidence that Soundgarden is actually in the studio recording a new album but gimmie a break. Look at Chris Cornell. Look at the bun in his hair. They clearly mean business. I'm definitely curious to know what will come of this.

Single: Sub Pop Edition #26 - The Jesus and Mary Chain - "Birthday / Hide Myself"

The (un?)holy union of Jesus and Mary Chain and the Sub Pop Singles Club (v.1998) - it's exactly what you would expect. Fuzzed out, pessimistic, pop music. Get into it.

1. Birthday
2. Hide Myself

This Explains Everything

Album: The Cows - "Sorry In Pig Minor"

Happy Monday everyone - here's "Sorry In Pig Minor" by the Cows. This is an eclectic and ingenious album that was produced by none other than King Buzzo. (Who?). SIPM was their 9th and final album and continues to be a favorite of mine because of the weird, fun vibes and how accessibly wacky it is. Perfect music to start your week off.... am I right or am I right?

Album: Clutch - The Elephant Riders

now i couldn't very well just mention clutch and not post anything by them (and in case you're wondering where they've been mentioned...just take a peek down yonder)

i hope that clutch doesn't really need any sort of explanation as to what they're all about, yeah?

one thing i've noticed about the clutch discography is that each album somehow leads into the one after it

"what are you talking about, sir? are you on something?"

what i meant by that was...take this album for example...it combines the punk energy from TRANSNATIONAL SPEEDWAY LEAGUE with the rawk of SELF-TITLED

and this leads into the JAM ROOM album where they completely head off into the meat and potatoes territory

still confused?

well...i can't seem to make it any clearer than that

just do yourself a favor and snag this up

DL: the elephant riders

Album: Sixty Watt Shaman - Seed Of Decades

this is one of those albums that you can't seem to just listen to one song from (it's like that for me anyway)

this is the kind of action that you want going down during a backyard bbq (and it'll put bbq sauce in your beard...and if you don't have a beard already...it will make you grow one just so you can put some there)

i was supposed to see these guys play in chicago back in '03 with clutch and a band called flybanger...i was stoked as i had just gotten into sixty watt shaman...and i'm a HUGE clutch fan (as we all should be)...but...the girl i was with at the time apparently thought it would be a bad idea to drive 2 hours in a snowstorm (and yes...i called her a sissy)...so for weeks afterward i was taunted by 2 unused tickets...and from what i'd heard about the show...there were only about 20 people there

that was a good story,grampa

if you consider yourself a fan of anything that's been posted here...you really REALLY need this as well

fine...i'll throw a few band names out there to help in the selling of the band:

alabama thunderpussy

karma to burn

the mighty nimbus (vocalist dan soren was a member at one time...and drummer pete campbell currently plays guitar in the band)

kyuss

post-1994 corrosion of conformity

did that work?

thought so

did you know that they'd considered calling the DOWN ON THE UPSIDE album COMIN' ATCHA! or MR. BUNCHY PANTS?

News: ATP "I'll Be Your Mirror" - New York 2011

So the lineup for ATP New York is starting to unravel again, but I'm not nearly as giddy as I was last year at this point. The lineup so far looks alright (Shellac, Bonnie Prince Billy) but I don't see myself buying a ticket and putting my life aside to travel to New York for it like I did last year. (Which was amazing.) I guess it's not really my cup of tea this year but I can see certain people being really stoked on this. Also, the festival is relocating to Astbury Park in New Jersey.

From ATP's website: "All Tomorrow's Parties returns to the USA this September in the new location of Asbury Park, N.J. bringing an I'll Be Your Mirror event to the iconic Asbury Park waterfront. For the inaugural American I'll Be Your Mirror, Portishead will curate the Saturday and Sunday and headline their first East Coast shows since 1998!"

You can check the full announced lineup here, and I'll be posting regular lineup updates like I did last year.
